The three stood in silence that was loud enough to deafen the average person. Jae was the first to speak, “So what the f_ck does all of this mean Regina? I mean, what is it that you’re trying to say.”
Regina looked Jae in the eyes for the first time in months, “It’s over Jae. I don’t want to do this anymore. My heart isn’t in it.”
Jae refused to again lose her cool composure. “Cool, that’s cool. Ain’t nothing left to say then. Y’all didn’t have to do me like this though.” Although the statement was directed towards both of them, Jae intended for them to mostly sting Morgan. “I thought we were better than that.” She finally said above a whisper moving towards the door.
Morgan felt she needed to say something before allowing Jae to leave… “Bro… I’m sorry. I swear, as soon as I realized how serious you were about her.. I backed off. I was wrong.” but her words fell on deaf ears – Jae was out the door before her sentence was complete.
Morgan and Regina stood staring at each other from opposite sides of the room. “What?” asked Morgan.
Regina wanted to choose her words wisely, but blurted out the first thing that came to her lips. “Be with me…” she said in a tone suggesting it was more of a question than a statement. She stood there now fidgeting and biting her lip. Not put off by the silence between them, she said more. “You were right about Jae. You were so right about her. She can’t make me happy. She dismissed my emotions.. she failed to see a good thing and she took me for granted. I deserve better and I want it to be you.”
Morgan dropped down onto the couch while wiping away some of the blood on her lip. Her thoughts and feelings were in unison, but she still hesitated in releasing the words. She frowned, mentally weighing her options. Morgan was so deep in her thoughts she didn’t notice that Regina had settled onto the couch next to her until she felt her touch her hand.
Still missing the words for a response, Morgan took Regina’s right hand into hers. She examined her own class ring on Regina’s ring finger then slowly slipped it off. Regina felt her heart sink as she accepted this for Morgan’s answer… but Morgan surprised her by replacing it not on her right ring finger, but her left. In doing this, Morgan had no idea how they would come back from this, but she was determined to keep her word to Regina… and spend the rest of her life making her happy.
