Halfway: Chapter 22

AJ sat in the hospital bed staring at the blank wall on the other side of the room. She didn’t turn her head when KT and Seven entered. Her eyes didn’t light up. Her mouth didn’t curve. She sat completely still oblivious to the world around her.

Her mind was racing though. It replayed the scenes from last night over and over again. She couldn’t think about anything else.

“AJ we’re here. Baby, you alright? How do you feel?” She felt an unexpected warmth envelop her hand. Without looking down, she realized Seven was holding her hand.

There was a part of her that longed to retreat. She wanted to hide in the darkest corner. She didn’t want anyone to see her like this. She must look like shit. She had to be covered with bruises and cuts. She had to be cut. The blood. So much blood.

A woman that could have been AJ’s older, rounder twin slowly entered the room. Upon seeing KT, she opened her arms. KT submitted to her hug without hesitation. Her eyes landed on Seven and then darted back to KT. Her darkly circled eyes were curious.

“KT, I don’t remember you ever mentioning a sister. Now I know I’m old, but I don’t think my memory is that bad.”

“It’s that obvious?” Seven stood to greet the woman. “I am KT’s sister, Seven…”

She embraced Seven. “What did your mama name you?” seven started laughing. She could see where AJ got it from.

“Angela, Mrs Savage.”

“Angela, how well do you know my daughter?” This petite woman looked up into Seven’s eyes with uncanny instinct.

“Not as well as I’d like to.”

KT stared hooting at Seven’s attempt to sidestep the question.  She forgot where she was earning a disapproving look from Mrs Savage.

“Let’s go into the lobby.” They were silent as they made the short walk down the hospital hallway.

“Mrs Savage, do you know what happened?” KT asked the question both she and Seven wanted answered.

“She killed him. He’s dead.”
