KT slammed her phone down on the receiver. She began to lose count of how many times she tried to reach AJ, but AJ didn’t answer her calls. She knew AJ went to work because her secretary only said she couldn’t take her calls, not that she wasn’t in the office.
“Well what’s stopping her from taking my call?” KT screamed at the poor messenger. “Are her hands tied behind her back? Do you know who I am?”
“Y…yes ma’am,” the secretary shuddered. “I will tell her that you called…again.”
KT called AJ’s house phone as well and still no answer. Now, it was Friday afternoon, hours before she and Seven left for their first family gathering together and still no word from Alyssa-Joy.
“Okay baby, I’ll call you when we get there.” Seven said sweetly as she ended her call with AJ.
The last few days were very weird. She hadn’t seen AJ since she left her catching up with her father. They spoke a few times though, always brief and no sure response on when they would speak again.
AJ assured Seven she was just busy with work and that she really missed her. The only other thing she was always adamant about was that Seven not tell KT about AJ’s father being in town.
“Angela, this is really important. Just don’t mention it to her.” AJ pleaded. “Okay baby?”
Even though she questioned the reason behind it and constantly asked AJ to call her Seven, she complied. Just hearing AJ’s sweet voice made it easy for Seven to go along with it. Well, it was also easy because she hadn’t run into KT yet. She knew as soon as she saw her new sister, she’d catch her up. What harm could it really do?
AJ walked to her door for the millionth time to check her locks. She hadn’t seen her father since he showed up while Angela was there. She knew he was close by though. He was planning something and she knew it. Every night she dreamt of him. She remembered the pain, the blood….
When AJ went to work she looked over her shoulder repeatedly. He heartbeat was always speeding faster than it should. She couldn’t bring herself to tell KT that he was in town. All KT would want to do is hover and the moment she saw him there would be trouble. It was best that she didn’t know for now. AJ hope that when Angela finally told her, because she knew she would, that they were already on the road heading to see their grandmothers.
Alyssa-Joy was so excited for the two of them. She wished she could have shown it more. The plan now was to keep them both far away from her and her father. The plan was to keep them alive.
“You know we’re only going for a weekend right?” KT asked her sister with and aggravated tone. “How many bags are you bringing woman?!”
“Listen, I need to be prepared for anything. Not everyone wants to pack and old dingy duffle bag for a road trip home.” Seven responded matter of factly and gesturing towards KT’s luggage.
“Hey!” KT screamed and laughed. “You don’t know my life.” KT threw Seven’s bags in the car. “I have every thing I need. Now, get in the car.
They shoved each other playfully as they walked around to their doors. KT immediately turned her radio to the country station she loved.
“Ooooo, I love this song.” KT began humming along.
“Wait! Stop! I know you don’t think we’re going to listen to this country mess all the way there,” Seven protested.
The went back and forth for half an hour before they decided on a station they both liked. Then they started debating when Seven should take over the wheel. It was ridiculous. They argued like sisters that had been arguing for years.
Two hours into the trip KT remembered she planned to complain about her best friend avoiding her.
“Have you spoken to AJ this week? That jerk hasn’t returned any of my phone calls!” KT began, already screaming.
“Yes, but briefly,” Seven answered. “It’s been very weird though. I haven’t seen her since her father stopped by and she’s been very distant over the phone.”
Seven grabbed the dashboard to stop herself from flying forward when KT slammed on the breaks.
“Her father!” KT’s eyes were filled with anger. “Did you say her father was in town?”
“Yes…what is wrong with you, you could have killed us?!” Seven screamed.
Where halfway there now. Why didn’t she tell me. Hundreds of questions bombarded KT’s mind. She was quiet for some time before she finally responded.
“We have to get through this weekend. It’s too late to go back now. We have to check on her every day.” KT looked at Seven with deep concern but she wanted her to know she was serious.
“What’s wrong KT?” Angela asked. “What’s going on with AJ?”
“We just need to hope for the best Seven…..her dad is very dangerous.”
