The last three months were a blur. For weeks after the double murder that took place in Erica-Rose’s town home, the police hounded them for answers. In the end, Erica had to admit how Kim ended up with a gun in her hand in the first place.
The gun was in her name, she had the only fingerprints on it, and there was just no other way to explain it being in the house. Erica and Karen tried to sugar coat the situation as best as they could. Thankfully, the detective wrapping up their case agreed that this part of the story didn’t need to get out and destroy the name of the woman who saved them.
Erica and Karen were walking out of the precinct holding hands when they ran into another detective who recognized Karen right away.
“Ms. Thompson, how are you?” the officer asked with excitement. He wrapped his arms around her and squeezed her tight as if they were old friends.
Before Karen had a chance to answer, the detective continued. “I haven’t heard from you in a long time, how have you and Jasmine been?”
Karen finally jumped into the conversation he almost had with himself. “We are doing well. I’ve been meaning to write you. Things have been quite hectic.”
“Is everything okay?” the detective asked, inquiring about their visit to the station.
“Oh yes, everything is fine. Just helping my fiance here take care of some business.”
Karen introduced Erica to the detective who wasn’t sure if he should mention how he knew Karen or not. There was a short conversation about the meeting he was heading to and Erica and Kim’s trip out of town before they finally parted ways.
“How do you know that guy babe? How does he know Jasmine?” Erica asked as she opened the car door for Karen.
“He probably wanted to respect my privacy, but that’s the officer who headed my rape case. We kept in touch a bit. No biggie.” Karen answered as she shut the door and buckled her seat belt.
“Ok okay.” Erica ended up saying to herself as she walked around to the other side. As she opened her own door though, she vaguely remembered Karen’s rapist mentioning that he killed some detective that was on her case.
Erica shrugged and thought to herself, guess he killed a different guy.
“Why didn’t you tell him bout the rapist, his death…” Erica finally asked as they drove out of the parking lot.
“I just want to finally put all this mess behind us. If I told him, it would bring the whole situation up again.” Karen answered with a sigh. “I’m ready to start my life with you.”
Erica pulled Karen’s hand to her lips as she watched the road and replied, “Well, let’s begin.”
The next day, Erica loaded their bags into the car. Just enough luggage for the two week trip to pick up the newest addition to their family. Erica finally convinced Karen to be the mom she knew she was. They were still planning the wedding and shopping around for their dream house, but they wanted Jasmine to be there when it all finally happened.
Still holding hands as they drove out of California towards their destination, Karen’s phone began to ring. She looked at the number with a frown right before she silenced it.
“Who you dodging?” Erica asked. “Bill collectors?.” Erica chuckled loudly.
Karen hesitated before chuckling too and playfully punching Erica. “No…I am not silly.” She turned the radio up as she thought to herself, if only she knew…
When Karen’s voice mail finally beeped for the caller to leave a message, the man sighed heavy with frustration.
“Ms. Thompson… This is…well, I’m sure you know who this is.” He sighed again. “I went through a lot of trouble to hire one of my guys with that stupid rose tattoo. Now, not only is he dead, but you aren’t answering my calls or sending me the rest of my money. I am not the kind of man you want to piss off Ms. Thompson. You owe me a lot of money…and…a life.”
