There was blood everywhere. Erica’s white blanket that covered her bed was soaked in Kim’s blood. The carpet was also bloody and it trailed down the steps towards the front door before it stopped in a huge puddle by the door.
Erica stood by that puddle with tears in her eyes as she watched the bodies get loaded in the ambulance. She wanted to look one more time but the body bags were already zipped up.
The officers were standing beside her. They kept trying to ask more questions and get more information about what took place.
The most she could get out was that a man broke into her home and terrorized her friend and fiance. She left out the part about Kim being the first armed person to break in tonight.
The officers were losing their patience. Erica just continued to stare at the ambulance and let her tears fall silently.
The only comfort she felt was the hand she held by her side. Karen squeezed Erica’s hand and leaned in closer.
“Baby, are you okay?” Karen asked, forcing Erica to make eye contact.
Erica took a deep breathe and finally answered all of the officers questions.
She told them about the first shot that placed a hole in Kim’s side. The struggle and wrestling for the gun. The officers raised their eyebrows when Erica mentioned the second gun. She told herself she would deal with that later.
During the last struggle for the shot gun, Karen lost her grip and her rapist used the barrel of the gun to hit her in the head. Thrown off guard by worry for Karen, Erica went down next.
The two of them were face to face with the gunman as he prepared to pull the trigger. It was Kim that actually saved them. While they were struggling, no one noticed her crawl over to the gun she bought.
The last thing Kim did before she died was aim and shoot. Her body hit the floor just as his did and everything went silent.
Erica cried as Kim’s lifeless body was carried out. Karen’s rapist was also carried out. Kim’s aim was remarkable. He never stood a chance once Kim returned the favor and placed a hole in his head.
Erica and Karen stood on the doorstep now as the neighbors slowly retreated to their homes. The officers wanted them to come down to the station tomorrow, but for tonight they were free.
For the second time in months, Erica packed a bag, locked up her house and slept somewhere else for the night.
