Midtown: Chapter 30

Ash wanted to excuse herself to bed. It had been one long day. From finding out about Ki to Evan’s return, she wanted to be alone with her thoughts. When she thought no one was paying attention, she started up the stairs, not realizing Ed was right behind her. She jumped when Ed touched her shoulder.

“Can we talk?” Ed spoke quietly. She nodded before turning the knob to her room. She took a seat on her bed while Ed stood in front of her, looking awkward. She shoved her hands in the pockets of her sweats and looked down at her. Ash could see uncertainty in her eyes.

“I miss us, Ash…” She sighed loudly. “I miss the friendship that we had. I miss us being able to laugh and talk about anything. What happened to that?”

“So you miss being my friend?”

“Friendship is the basis for every healthy, loving relationship…And you know I love you…Don’t you?”

“You love me? Then why have you been spending all of these months crying over Taylor?”

“I felt guilty. That night…”Her face broke out into a rare smile. “That night was one of the best nights of my life. Don’t get a big head, but I think it was the best night ever. I have never felt more complete, more in tune with another person. It was just perfect. And it bothered me that while I was floating on cloud nine she was on the floor dying. I was supposed to protect her, Ash, but instead I was up under you…”

“And on top of me, and next to me…” Ash sighed. “You felt guilty for being happy?” It was all starting to make sense to me.

“Yes, but I don’t feel guilty anymore. Can’t you forgive me?” She got down on her knees. “Please, Ash, I’m begging you…”

Ash grabbed her hands and pulled her towards the bed. “You don’t have to beg. You look like the most pitiful overgrown puppy ever.” She wrapped her arms around Ash as they leaned back on to the bed. Ash’s body sank into hers when her arms surrounded and squeezed her. She felt her heart beat increase. “This feels perfect…”

“No, this isn’t perfect yet…” She touched Ash’s chin, forcing her head up towards hers and pressed her lips against mine. Their lips clung together, their bodies arched forward in search of a deeper closeness. Ash’s breathing was shallow and fast. Ash pulled away.

“Wait, before we do this, I have something I have to tell you.”
