Halfway: Chapter 1

Okay Seven, you can do this, Angela Brown thought to herself. You’re in a new town with a new job and now you’re going to show them why they hired you.

Angela was on her way into her first board meeting and couldn’t wait for the chance to prove herself. She knew she could do the job better than most of the men that held higher positions. Usually, men resented her for being in the office and not in a kitchen, but Angela was determined to make a difference in their lives as well as the lives of the children that benefit from HOPE Inc.

Clearing her throat and straightening out her skirt suit one last time, she entered the room thinking, I’ll be running the place by this time next year.

“Ms. Brown, thank you for joining us this morning. Here, have a seat up front.” The CEO and founder of HOPE stood to pull out her chair. “We were just discussing you. Are you ready to get your feet wet?”

“Yes Sir,” Angela responded quickly pulling out her note pad.

“Great,” Angela’s boss continued, “We are having our 10th annual Scholarship Fundraiser for the children accepted to four year universities this coming fall. This entire event is now your project.” He handed her a huge manila envelope, “This is all the contact information for the committee and what they’ve done so far. The first thing we need to do is get a start on publicity, the event is just around the corner.

Angela reassured her boss that the event would be more than he could ever expect. The rest of the meeting she smiled, nodded, and silently came up with her plan of action to go above and beyond. First things first, she needed to contact someone about flyers.

“Good morning Nancy,” Alyssa-Joy smiled at her secretary.

“Good morning Ms. Savage, your mother called and I have Angela Brown from HOPE Inc on line one,” Nancy announced as Alyssa-Joy disappeared behind her desk.

“Thanks hun,” Alyssa-Joy replied. She rolled her eyes at her mother, who called every day asking about grandchildren. However, this call from HOPE was the highlight of her morning.

Alyssa-Joy had been donating to the HOPE Foundation for years, but she wanted to be more hands on. The foundation was having a fundraiser to raise scholarship money for students accepted to four year universities. She managed to steal a spot on the committee and they put her in charge of the entertainment.

“This is AJ Savage speaking, Ms. Brown how can I help you?” Alyssa-Joy loved to abbreviate her name, it was like her alter-ego.

Seconds later a surprisingly, sexy voice began talking. “Ms. Savage, it’s so great to speak with you. How are you this morning?”

“I’m doing great and I am so excited to be a part of this event. By the way…….please…..call me AJ. How are you adjusting to the new city?” Alyssa-Joy asked in reply. She heard the new Director of Scholarship and Funds was new to town.

“Well between me and you, Columbus could use a decent jazz club,” Angela said with a chuckle. “Other than that, I’m getting by just fine.”

“A better jazz spot!?” Alyssa-Joy replied in disbelief. “You need to visit Dave’s spot down on Magnolia Ave. There’s nothing like it. You’ll change your mind after that.” Alyssa-Joy smiled to herself, thinking of the countless dates she had there, that ended just the way she liked, hot and steamy.

“Well after that reaction, I will have to check it out.” Angela responded. “You know, if it’s a complete let down, I’m blaming you.” Angela laughed out loud.

“Not a problem Ms. Brown,” Alyssa-Joy bit her lip gently before continuing. “I promise, you will be absolutely satisfied.”

Angela cleared her throat, “Well I called this morning for two reasons. One, to tell you that I read your update on the entertainment and I am extremely excited. The second reason is because I am in a huge bind. I need to really get started on publicity but we can’t find anyone to handle the flyers. I was wondering if you knew someone that could help.”

“As a matter of fact, I do” Alyssa-Joy replied. “A good friend of mine has her own printing press and she’s always looking for more work.” Alyssa-Joy laughed at the thought of her friend, sitting at home, waiting for her next gig to come along. “I’ll give her a call and have her get back to you.”

“Oh Ms. Savage, you are a life saver.” Angela said full of excitement and as she twirled her hair with her fingers, she added, “I definitely owe you one.”

Alyssa-Joy raised her eyebrow as she replied, “Well then, we’ll have to think of something wont we?” Alyssa-Joy smiled at her own flirtatious thoughts and figured she better get back to business. “So, I’ll go ahead and give my contact a call and then have her get back to you about those flyers.”

“I would greatly appreciate that AJ, and since we’re losing the last names, you can call me Seven,” Angela smiled sweetly to herself, “All my good friends do.”

There was a slight pause and then they both laughed simultaneously for absolutely no reason.

“You have a great day AJ,” Angela managed to get out through her slight giggle.

“You do the same Angela.” Alyssa-Joy responded, firmly, but still very soft.

“You mean Seven don’t you? I don’t recall asking you to call me Angela.” Angela stated stern but with a soft chuckle on the end.

“No ma’am,” AJ replied. “You did not ask me to call you Angela. We’ll work on that.”

Alyssa-Joy immediately dialed Kaycee’s number the second she hung up with Angela. Kaycee was never up before noon. She laughed out loud, when Kaycee answered. She could tell from her voice she was still under her covers.

“Hey!” Alyssa-Joy yelled. “Wake up sleeping beauty, the sun will not go away if you ignore it!” Alyssa-Joy paused to continue laughing.

“You interrupted a very important dream starring me and Aretha Franklin. This better be good.” Kaycee replied with her eyes still close.

“Aretha Franklin!” AJ responded with a laugh, “You cheating on me already huh?” AJ loved to tease KT. “Bet she can’t love you like I do?”

They both laughed and KT added, “No one could replace you babe. So how can I help you?”

It didn’t take much for Alyssa-Joy to enlist her best friend. KT would do anything for her and she would do anything for KT.

Alyssa-Joy hung up the phone and asked her secretary to send in the first client.

KT rolled over, hoping to a couple more hours of sleep in. She squeezed her pillow tight and thought to herself, I wish AJ was in my arms instead of this body pillow. KT sighed and drifted off to sleep.
