Midtown: Chapter 29

In Evans room, Michelle was resting in Evan’s big four poster bed. The bed hugged her body so closely and softly, she felt herself being lulled to sleep. That was after she had Evan take her on a tour of the entire house. Michelle loved her new home. She’d love it even more when she got the rest of the weirdos out.

She had already picked out a room that would belong to the baby. She’d have to redecorate, but then again, that was something she’d have to do for the entire house. It all needed her stamp of elegance. She giggled. You’ve hit the jackpot, she thought to herself.

Remembering she promised to call her mother, she picked up her cell and hit the second speed dial button. At the sound of her Mom’s voice, she started squealing, “Mommy, it’s perfect. Ooh, you should see it. It’s the cutest house, in the most wonderful neighborhood. I can’t believe it. I think I’m dreaming!”

“But didn’t you say he had roommates? What about them?” Her mother’s voice sounded so critical. “I don’t know about that young man. There is something…odd…about him. I still think you can do better.”

“Mommy, you know I didn’t really have time to plan this. I didn’t have time to waste. And he might be a bit…odd…but he will take good care of me and this child. By the time he realizes what has happened, he’ll be stuck supporting us for at least the next 18 years!” She laughed.

“Poor silly man. I’ve never seen anybody so desperate. I mean look at you. You’re no prize. As a matter of fact, he’s prettier than you are.” Her mother started cackling, reminding her of a buzzard. Michelle frowned. Her mother always used every opportunity to put her down.

“Mom, I’m getting sleepy. I think it’s time for me to go to bed.” She added a fake yawn to make her random statement seem more believable.

“Alright then, hun. Call me soon.” Click. That was as close to a good bye she ever got from her mother. She rubbed her swelling stomach.

“I’m going to give you all the love in the world. You will never want for anything. I promise you that.” A slight noise in the hallway caught her attention. She laid still and listened, but decided it was just the old house settling.

The person in the hallway stood still, aware that Michelle had heard their footsteps. The entire conversation Michelle had with her mother had been overheard. The listener went back downstairs attempting to decide what to do with this new information.
