Erica-Rose was walking down Melrose Avenue, doing a little therapeutic shopping to clear her head. As a child she loathed the idea of shopping. It was such a grueling and tortuous task. She would later realize when she was alone and not being dragged along by other shopaholics, she rather enjoyed it.
It never took Erica long to find something she liked. Her style was very unique and she had little trouble making any outfit her own. At 5’6 her toned legs made any pair of shorts or jeans look designer. She wasn’t much of a skirt woman. However, when caught in a rare “girly” moment, a mid-thigh length sun dress flowed perfectly over her coke-bottle shape and subtle breast.
Her brown hair hung down to the middle of her back and the only feature that seemed to match its beauty were her green eyes. Erica-Rose was accustomed to avoiding eye contact with strangers. The moment someone saw her eyes, she was annoyed with the millions of questions like, “Are they really yours?” “What you mixed with?” Then there were the insults in their disbelief that both of her parents were African American. Even at the age of 28, she still ran into ignorant people weekly.
So far today every store left her free of this aggravation. She had at least two outfits by now and a new pair of boots she’d been dying for. It was walking across the street to her favorite vintage shop when she saw her. Erica-Rose always wondered what she would feel….what she would say….if she would remember to breath. The pounding headache she was beginning to feel let her know; she did indeed forget to breathe.
She darted into the next store before Karen could see her. As she gathered herself together, she had visions of the last time she saw her first love.
Four Years Ago
It’s September and the moon was full. Erica-Rose and Karen spent the day at the beach, but lingered behind when the other families left with their children. They should have left when the stars came out. Instead, they turned into each other, wrapped in their blanket and watched each star take its place for the evening.
Erica turned to Karen and planted the sweetest kiss on her forehead, “have I told you how beautiful you are today?”
Karen rubbed her nose against Erica’s and replied, “no, but I’m sure you’re about to.” They both chuckle lightly and start to kiss softly.
Erica stops. She reaches into her beach bag and pulls out something too small for Karen to notice. Erica turns to Karen, looking deep into Karen’s hazel eyes and says, “Karen, I’ve loved you since the moment I met you.”Even in the moonlight, Karen could be seen blushing through her caramel skin as she averted her eyes.
Erica lifts Karen’s chin to reconnect their gaze and continued. “I know people say that is impossible, but I swear I felt my heart really beat for the first time the moment you brushed my skin as you nonchalantly walked pass me. I never knew real music until I heard the rhythm of your heart. Since then, I don’t think I have ever seen my future without you in it.”
Erica takes a much needed deep breathe, hoping to slow her fast pacing heart. She grabs Karen’s hand to lock their fingers together and begins again. “I want you to be the last person I see every night and the first every morning. I want to bring so much joy to your life that you never feel alone. I want to love you forever baby.”
Erica laughs to herself before her next statement, “and all I ask in return is that you love me the same…….have my babies…and cook my breakfast most mornings.” They both laughed out loud. Erica was such a simple woman, so easy to please if she loved you. Erica grabs Karen’s ring finger, “Karen Thompson, will you marry me?”
Karen was speechless; she couldn’t stop staring at the huge ring that was now on her finger. Erica-Rose vaguely saw a single tear fall from Karen’s eyes and then kissed her so passionately, no one was confused at what was coming next.
Erica wiggled around, found her way between Karen’s legs and began to kiss her neck, her collar bone and lingered on her breast that she loved so much. Karen moaned, she loved this part. It took Erica seconds to get Karen out of her bathing suit. It was Erica’s least favorite that they always argued about because, it covered very little. Karen loved it because; it drove Erica crazy and guaranteed that her hands would be all over her, all day.
Karen delved into Erica’s hair with her fingers. She loved the soft curls that formed when wet. Erica was down to her thighs by now, kissing and biting so gently it made Karen shiver. Karen could never take the teasing for too long, she moaned again, heavily, “baby…please…I need you.”
Erica took directions very well, she began to circle Karen’s clit with her tongue, slowly, then faster and the second Karen could control her breathing, she would go even faster. She positioned two of her fingers and with every ounce of passion inside her, she thrust them deep into her love, shivering herself, at the sound of Karen’s enjoyment.
Erica lived to please her. This was Erica’s favorite part, Karen tasted like the strawberries and champagne they had earlier. She would keep her tongue and fingers connected to Karen’s body until she begged her to stop. Karen’s breathing was erotic now and in between gasps, “Erica…..baby….don’t……don’t.” They both knew Erica would never stop and she didn’t, until Karen was seconds from cuming and pulled away from her.
In hunger, Erica pulled her back to her mouth, but Karen pulled away again. They both froze in the moment. Erica asked, “What’s wrong babe?”
“Nothing,” Karen replied, “Just hold me.”
Erica was confused, she was worried, but she obliged. Wrapping her arms around Karen, their bodies fit so well together. They wrapped back underneath their blanket and as they drifted off to sleep, Erica felt a tear fall onto her breast, where Karen laid.
Erica was the light sleeper of the two and Karen slept like a rock. However, sometimes Erica got so lost in the peace, she slept harder than usual. It was because of this that she thought she was dreaming when Karen whispered in her ear, “I’m sorry babe, but I can’t be with you.”
Erica woke up around five am, just in time to see the sun rise. She was alone. Just before she was about to get worried, she caught the light coming off of the ring she bought. It was on her finger. Erica watched the sun come up frozen in thought and silence. When the sun no longer touched the horizon, she packed her things and drove back home.
She wondered a million questions, “where did she go?” “How did she get there?” “Why isn’t she answering her phone?”
